This game was played on the turf at East Haven High School. Branford received
the opening kickoff and cut right through the Easties on the game's first series
which culminated when DJ Ryan hit Nick Linta for a 25 yard TD pass over the
middle and then Curtis Sutherland busted up the middle to add the extra point
for a 7-0 lead. East Haven's first drive stalled, and they had to punt, but
after the ball bounced it hit a Branford player and East Haven got the ball
around midfield. A couple of plays later, while in Branford territory, they
fumbled it away. Branford took over and in the second quarter worked the ball
down to East Haven's 4 yard line. Curtis Sutherland took the pitch and swept
around the left side, but fumbled near the goal line. Chris Rice picked it up
and stepped into the end zone for a 13-0 lead which Branford took into the half.
In the second half, East Haven's offense continued to sputter, and they
ultimately changed quarterbacks. Curtis Sutherland ran for 2 long TDs on sweeps
around the right side and Branford built up a 25-0 lead through 3 quarters.
Sutherland added his third TD run in the fourth quarter, racking up well over
150 yards on the ground, as Branford built up a 32-0 lead with 5 minutes to go
in the game. East Haven added a late score on a 63 yard touchdown sweep around
the left end to cap the scoring at 32-6.
Branford dominated both sides of the ball as several players had big games. DJ
Ryan completed several passes. Walter Kreske had a big 20 yard catch. Justin
Blood, Charlie Boyd and Alex Borkowski added several nice runs on offense.
Branford recovered 2 East Haven fumbles and picked off a pair of passes, the
last of which by Matt O'Neil in the Red Zone as East Haven was trying to score
again in the last seconds of the game.
