Madison won the toss and deferred their choice to the 2nd half, so Branford took
the ball. But the Hornet's first drive ended with an interception, which gave
the Cougars great starting field position. Madison drove the ball down into
Branford's end, but could not score, turning the ball over on downs. The Hornets
started on their own 6 yard line and moved the ball all the way to Madison's 4,
but turned it over on downs when they went for it on 4th down and DJ Ryan got
sacked. Madison pushed the ball back into Branford's red zone, but again were
stopped by a tough Hornet D that stepped up and earned the ball back on downs.
Ryan took a couple of knees and the half ended in a scoreless tie.
Madison took the kick off in the second half, but after a hard Curtis Sutherland
hit during the run back, the Cougars fumbled it away on their own 35. But the
Hornets could not capitalize. Back and forth the two teams went, moving the ball
and then stalling. The third quarter also ended in a scoreless tie.
In the fourth quarter, Madison mixed it up, handing the
ball off to big #66 Wesley Staples, who tore off big chunks of yards on the
ground, and the passing of lefty #9. This combo helped the Cougars move the ball
down to Branford's 18 yard line, and when the drive came up against a 4th and 4
situation, they handed to Staples, and he delivered with a tackle breaking, 18
yard run around the left side and through for a TD. A bad snap and a cover up on
the kick made the score 6-0 Madison with a little over 7 minutes to play.
The Hornets next drive moved into Madison's side of the field and
came up against a 4th and 4 situation on the Cougars' 44 yard line. DJ Ryan
dropped back and fired a perfect strike to Andrew Cohen, who was cutting through
2 defenders at the 25, and Cohen ran it into the end zone for a TD. Curtis
Sutherland's sweep around the right side was stuffed and the score remained tied
at 6-6 with a little over 3 minutes in the game.
An onside squibb kick gave the Cougars great field position at
their own 46 to start their game winning drive. Pounding the ball up the middle
with a heavy dose of #66, Madison moved down to Branford's 17 with a minute to
play. #9 fired a TD pass into the far corner for a touchdown and then the
Cougars kicked the 2 point conversion to win this game, 14-6.
