It was an overcast, warm fall afternoon as Branford's Freshman Hornets took to the gridiron at Platt Tech High School in Milford to face the upstart Panthers. Platt won the toss, and deferred their choice to the second half, so Branford chose to receive the opening kickoff. The Hornets first drive pushed across midfield with runs up the middle by Curtis Sutherland and Andrew Cohen. It ultimately stalled around Platt Tech's 40 when it was 4th and one and the Hornets couldn't get that last yard and turned the ball over on downs. Platt took over and moved down to Branford's goal line surprising the Hornets by mixing the pass effectively with the run as the first quarter came to an end. But Branford's D stood tough when they had to and kept the Panthers out of the end zone and got the ball back on downs at their own 5. When the first half was nearing its end, Branford mounted a nice drive highlighted when DJ Ryan zipped a short pass to Sutherland, who turned it into a 20 yard gain inside the Panther red zone. A couple short runs later, Sutherland broke into the end zone and Branford was on the board. The kick that followed was blocked, so the score was 6-0.

With just a little under a minute in the half, Platt took the short kickoff and the Panther QB passed and scrambled his way down close but time expired and the 6-0 score stood up at half time.

It was Platt's call in the second half, and they decided to kickoff again. Branford thanked the Panthers for the generosity by adding two more touchdowns in the third quarter as Curtis Sutherland ran for a 30 yarder and DJ Ryan threw to Jared Keck for a short one and then also threw for the 2 point conversion to give the Hornets a 20-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Platt was finally back sniffing the goal line but Andy Klarman intercepted a fourth down pass and Branford took over on their own 20. On the ensuing play, Curtis Sutherland broke through the line and ran untouched for his third touchdown of the day. Matt O'Neill added the PAT and Branford closed this one out 27-0 to improve to 2-0.
