It was a beautiful fall morning as May's Seniors had to trek all the way out to
Haddam-Killingworth High School in Higganum to play the Warriors from TriTown.
After losing the flip, the Hornets kicked off and the TriTown receiver caught it
on a knee at the Warriors' 35. TriTown went right down and scored - pounding the
ball into the line over and over with Cruz and Silas, the latter of which was
the one to score. The 2 point kick that followed made it 8-0.
Branford took the next kick and went right down and scored as well, using runs
by Justin Blood and Charlie Boyd and a heavy dose of Curtis Sutherland up the
middle and around the ends. Sutherland scored the touchdown on a short run and
then Chris Rice kicked the extra 2 point conversion to tie the game at 8.
The Warriors second drive started after a line drive kickoff was caught and two
players collided and the ball came out and rolled around, but TriTown recovered
on their own 45. The Warriors marched right down - 55 yards - draining most of
the rest of the 2nd quarter using short runs and scoring when Creeron punched it
in on right side for the TD. The kick was short, but the score was now 14-8.
There was 1:44 left in the half and the kick by Silas sailed over Sutherland's
head, but Curtis picked it up and ran it back for an 82 yard touchdown. But the
score was erased by a questionable block in the back penalty that pinned the
Hornets deep in own end. When it got to be 4th and 8 from the 12, for some
unknown reason, the Hornets went for it and came up short, turning the ball over
on downs. TriTown got the ball back with under a minute in the half, but luckily
Nick Linta picked off a pass in the end zone. Again, for some unknown reason,
Nick decided to run with it rather than taking a knee and was tackled at the 1
foot line. DJ Ryan pushed forward on a QB keeper and then Branford let the clock
run out without running another play and headed into halftime.
The Hornets took the kickoff to open the third and moved to midfield. When it
got to be 4th and 5, Sutherland broke through the line and ran all the way to
the 20. Branford pounded the next few up the middle to get down to the goal line
and then Sutherland took it in for the TD. The conversion was stuffed so the
score remained tied at 14.
On the first play after the kickoff, #34 - Cruz, ran for a 60 yard TD and the
Hornets blocked the kick making it 20-14.
As the 4th quarter began, Branford worked their way up to midfield and it was
Sutherland converting a 4th and 4. A 15 yard pass play from Ryan to Andrew Cohen
followed moving deep into Warrior territory. Ryan kept feeding it to Sutherland,
who took it around the ends and alternated with busting runs up the middle by
Alex Borkowski. Borkowski followed a great block by Fabio Santone in for a 5
yard TD run to tie the game at 20. After a long delay, the run that followed was
denied.
A great kick by Josh DiMassa pinned the Warriors back at their own 20, but they
then ate up most of the remaining time in 4th quarter with an 80 yard drive full
of short runs and ultimately scored with just under 3 minutes left in the game
on a series of broken tackles as #39 Creeron took it in for his second TD. The
run attempt that followed was stuffed, so the score was 26-20.
After getting the kickoff and returning it to midfield, a run for a loss was
followed by several unsuccessful pass plays and the Hornets turned the ball over
on downs, and TriTown ran out the clock to win it.
